Farmers in Training: Popular Y Fitness Program Returns
HOLDREGE – The Don Sjogren Community YMCA will once again offer a fitness program tailored toward farmers this winter.
F.I.T. (Farmers in Training) will begin Jan. 7. The class will meet from 10-11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays through Feb. 27. Both Y members and non-members are invited to participate, and the class is not limited to farmers.
“Being a farmer is often a physically demanding job that requires lifting heavy items, climbing onto equipment, and working long hours,” YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Tifani Sorensen said. “This class will help farmers and anyone participating to gain strength, flexibility, and endurance.”
With over 23 years of experience as an ASFA (American Sports & Fitness) Fitness Professional, Sorensen brings knowledge and enthusiasm to her classes. She has trained people ages 6 months to 106 years and has a special interest in helping those aged 55 and older.
“Exercise classes are beneficial for our mental and physical health,” Sorensen said. “I truly believe in building a community of strength, health and support through fitness and friendships.”
Before COVID-19, the Y offered a Fit Farmers program. It was paused due to staffing challenges and the rise of at-home fitness options. Now, as group classes return to the forefront, the YMCA is excited to reintroduce this farmer-focused class to the community.
“Studies show that group exercise classes help people stay committed to their fitness goals longer than working out alone,” Sorensen said. “Friends who work out together, get healthy together!”
The F.I.T. program is designed for all fitness levels and welcomes men, women, and couples of all ages. The progressive format builds on personal bests each week, focusing on:
Strengthening ankles, knees, hips, and core.
Learning proper form for lifting, bending, and balancing.
Exercises such as planks, pushups, and stretches to improve flexibility and joint stability.
Functional training and heart health.
“We will build habits that fit the participants’ fitness goals,” Sorensen said. “We will modify the abilities in their stage of life.”
Participants can look forward to a friendly atmosphere, group encouragement, and free coffee and conversation after class.
